Roasting marshmallows is so yesterday. On your next trip, instead of plain old marshmallows, take strawberries and marshmallow fluff. You’ve never had a strawberry until you’ve had Campfire Roasted Strawberries.
Even if you don’t like marshmallows. Like me.
Magical things happen when you cover a strawberry with marshmallow fluff and roast it over an open campfire. Delicious, magical things.
Campfire Roasted Strawberries
So here’s the story. I was browsing Pinterest and came along this photo for Toasted Marshmallows. Only a photo, no recipe or link or anything else. It was a strawberry, coated in marshmallow, and gently browned over a fire. It sounded weird, but interesting. Just for fun, I took the ingredients on our next camping trip. My daughter and I gamely dipped strawberries into the jar of fluff (that totally doesn’t work, by the way…use a knife). Then we skewered our berries and stuck them into the fire. After the fluff caught fire (oops) we popped them into our mouths. Hot! Hot! Yes, the rest of the family had a great time laughing at us jumping around with hot berries in our mouths. And then…this sensory nirvana hit us, like something out of Charlie & the Chocolate Factory (1971 version) and we both experienced a swirling sensation of flavor and warmth and cool and sweet and…oh, it was delicious.
And she and I agreed right then, we will always, always take strawberries and marshmallow fluff on our camping trips.
For your next camping trip, take strawberries and a jar of marshmallow fluff. Trust me, you’ll be glad you did and your family will think you’re amazing. (The idea came from Pinterest but no source was listed).
